About The University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID)

The University of Maiduguri was established in 1975 as a second-generation institution under the Third National Development Plan. In 1976, it inherited the premises from the former North East College of Arts and Science (NECAS), which provided adequate office blocks, classrooms, staff quarters, and laboratories. The university’s personnel were absorbed into the university’s employment, allowing it to begin academic programs in October 1976.

The University of Maiduguri enrolled Seven Hundred and Forty-Three (743) students in its first academic year, with three faculties: Arts and Education, Science, and Social Science and Law. By 1978, it had expanded to six faculties, including the Faculty of Agriculture and Law. The School of Basic Studies was introduced in 1976 and transformed into a single-year remedial program in 1980.

The University of Nigeria, located in Nigeria’s northeastern region, attracts students from Europe, Asia, the Caribbean Islands, and Africa due to its cosmopolitan nature. By 2000, student enrollment had reached 26,000, and the university had expanded to eight faculties, including a College of Medical Sciences, a Faculty of Engineering, and a Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

As of 2016, the university had 12 faculties, including Agriculture, Arts, Dentistry, Education, Engineering, Law, Management Sciences, Pharmacy, Science, Social Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine.
